I never expected that…

On Thursday night I headed down to Jaspers open mic night in Shifnal for the first time in almost a year with just my acoustic guitar, by the end of my set I was playing ‘Back to Black’ by Amy Winehouse at full pelt with a drummer, bassist and keyboard player.

At the start of the night I spotted Mick Keefe and asked him if he’d like to play bass with me. I’ve never played with Mick before, although he is an awesome bass player and I’ve seen him play before. When we’d established that I wanted to play some of my songs which Mick had never heard before, I knew the night was going to be interesting!

We sat in the beer garden with my guitar, a pen and paper joined by Vince, who plays keys with Mick in 70s funk band Groove City. So now we had Mick on bass, Vince on keys and me on guitar and vocals, hastily transposing a three song set to play within the next half hour.

I went up to play a few songs acoustically before being joined by Mick, Vince and at last minute Jase, who joined us to play drums. None of them had heard my original song before tonight, this was going to go one of two ways!

First up, we played ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?’ written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and famously sung by The Shirelles.

The next song we played was ‘If I Were to Fall’, a song I wrote last summer and the song that I took to the regional finals of Open Mic UK. I’ve never heard it played with drums or keys before and it really opened my eyes to what it could sound like. Studio here I come!

Finally, we finished with the Amy Winehouse signature song ‘Back to Black’. It was really cool to hear Vince play the famous riff on the keyboard in the first few bars.

A massive thank you to Mick, Vince and Jase for jamming with me, I had such a good time! See you down at Jaspers soon!

Jaspers Open Mic Night is on every Thursday from 9pm.
